The extreme avocado shortage is likely to remain for at least another two months, suppliers have warned.
Rani Friedlander, general manager of Agrexco, the Israeli marketing organisation responsible for the majority of supply at this time of year, said the heat wave last June had reduced the crop by at least a third. The shortage has coincided with a low crop year in Spain.
Until the South African harvest in late spring, importers will be searching the world for supplies. Alternative supplies could be available from Mexico and Chile, as well as Crete and Kenya.
Israeli Haas is currently making up to £7/carton at wholesale.
