Competitive imports from Kenya and Spain South African avocado growers have cut back on UK shipments at the peak of the season because of heavy volumes and the effect of competitive imports from Kenya and the extension of the Spanish season. According to Chris Keevy, executive director of the South African Avocado Growers' Association, this will mean a temporary drop in shipments from the average of 630,000 boxes a week to between 450,000 and 600,000 boxes over the next month. "The current surplus is temporary," he said. "Once they have cleared, supplies are expected to be steady. The next shipment of our avocados will hold 450,000 boxes, around a 30% reduction on recent exports." Quality this season is reported as good and both green Fuerte and black Hass are in retail stores. Wholesale market prices have ranged between £4.50 to £6. Over the next three weeks the proportion of Hass will increase,. This variety now accounts for 50% of production. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
