Agrexco is planning to develop a niche market for smaller sized avocados under its Carmel brand, in counts of 24 to 32. UK general manager Rani Friedlander said these would require new packaging while there was an overall need to educate consumers to help them select, buy and use the fruit: "We still lag behind Europe in our consumption." Avocado exports from Israel to the UK this winter will, meanwhile, be similar to last year's 3,500 tonnes. - Israeli growers have successfully grown pitayas, the cerise and green exotic which supermarkets have christened dragonfruit. Historically, it has been imported from Brazil, Thailand and Vietnam. The Arava desert is an alternative source. Agrexco's exotics manager Michael Caddy said the UK would initially receive 30 cartons a week. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
