Trading director Francis Ball has taken the helm at the UK arm of US cash and carry giant Costco.
His American predecessor,
Jim Murphy, has been promoted to senior vice president of international operations, based at the company’s Seattle headquarters. A spokesman said Murphy would be responsible for the company’s Asian as well as its UK operations, and for any further international businesses it opened.
Ball, who is English and is now UK managing director, joined the company shortly after it opened its first UK depot at Thurrock, Essex in 1993.
Since then, Costco’s UK estate has grown to 15 depots, with four more new sites at an advanced stage of the planning process.
However, plans to expand to 40-plus depots in the UK have been hampered by planning restraints and difficulties in finding suitable sites.
