MLC chairman Peter Barr has said the perpetual auctioning of meat contracts by the multiples is "squeezing our processing sector and throttling supply chain reinvestment".
Barr, addressing a meat wholesalers conference, said purchasing policies at multiples, with the exception of Waitrose and M&S, were "short-term, price-driven and adversarial".
Speaking after an OFT consultation on whether the grocery trade should be referred to the Competition Commission, Barr said it was necessary to expose "the practices that rely on abuse of power". He said the levy boards had made strong representations to the OFT.
