BAT, Britain's biggest tobacco company, is being investigated over claims it encouraged smuggling Secretary of state for trade and industry Stephen Byers ordered the probe after the Commons Health Select Committee heard allegations by anti smoking campaigners that BAT exported cigarettes to countries where there was no demand for their brands. Bootleggers transported the cigarettes back to the UK for sale on the blackmarket. Legal experts said it was "unlikely" BAT would face prosecution even if wrongdoing is found. BAT owns the Dunhill and Benson and Hedges brands. It said it was "naturally disappointed" but promised full cooperation. {{NEWS }}
