The government has been urged to set up a Better Shops task force to tackle the exodus of shoppers from the corner shop to the hypermarket. The call comes in a report The Crisis in UK Local Food Retailing' by Toby Peters, director of Community Owned Retailing and Tim Lang Professor of food policy at Thames Valley Univer-sity's Centre of Food Policy. Numbers of neighbour-hood and independent grocery stores are declining by 10% a year, and multiples with under 1,500 stores between them account for 85% of the £80bn modern grocery industry's sales says the report. {{NEWS }}
