There are clear indications that the police and trading standards officers are stepping up their attempts to catch retailers for under-age selling. Grocer Club members are reminded it is an offence to sell tobacco products and Lottery tickets or scratchcards to children who are under the age of 16. It is also illegal to sell single cigarettes to adults (maximum fine £1,000). It is an offence to sell alcohol, restricted video films, fireworks, butane gas cigarette lighter refills, and other solvents if you suspect the child is likely to abuse them to those under the age of 18. Independent retailers are urged to study legislation covering sales to those under age and to train their staff. If there is any doubt whatsoever, staff should ask for proof of age and, if doubt still persists, refuse the sale. {{GROCER CLUB }}
