A new strawberry variety called Albion, bred by experts at the University of California, is taking the state by storm.
US scientist Kirk Larson told the UK berry industry’s annual conference last month that since its launch early this year many Californian growers had indicated that Albion would eventually take over from one of the best known, proven varieties, Diamante.
Albion recently underwent 100 tests, evaluating its yield, flavour, disease resistance and appearance, in which it performed at least as well as Diamante. In Europe, breeders are testing its potential prior to it becoming commercially available in two years’ time.
