The voluntary code is intended to set a benchmark for best practice in the packaging industry and is used by UK-based companies and overseas importers.
Packagers signing up to the standards, first launched in 2001, receive special certification and have until March to comply with the proposals.
Revisions have been made in consultation with the BRC, the IoP, packaging and food manufacturers and certification
groups. The BRC said the document addresses issues such as reducing packaging defects and maintaining high hygiene.
BRC director general Kevin Hawkins said: “The engagement of stakeholders from food and packaging manufacturers means best practice is established, achieved and maintained.”
