Growers in Provence say this year’s crop of Bigarreau cherries, used to make glacé cherries, is “disastrous”.
Several frosts on the buds at the end of March and on the flowers in early April are said to have destroyed 50% of the potential crop. Of the remaining crop, ‘double fruit’ has been observed on up to 60%.
Double fruit are a major handicap to processors because the automatic sorting machinery cannot remove their stones.
ANIBI, the French association of producers and processors, said the problems were bound to inflate the cost of the cherries at a time when sales were rising.
