Defra intends to lift the protection and surveillance zones that were established after the H5N1 avian influenza outbreak in Suffolk last month.

The control measures put in place around the first protection zone will be lifted tomorrow and the second should be lifted on Monday, subject to there being no recurrence of the disease.

The two zones will become part of the wider surveillance zone, which is expected to lift on 19 December.

The requirement to isolate poultry from wild birds in the “restricted zone”, which covers much of Norfolk and the whole of Suffolk, is also expected to lift on 10 December.

Other restrictions on bird gatherings and movements of poultry and poultry meat within the zones will remain in place.
