Low labour costs, high quality and strong demand from UK supermarkets have led to blueberry specialist Winterwood Farms expanding its Polish farm near Lublin.
MD Steve Taylor aims to produce more than 1,750 tonnes of Polish blueberries annually, which he expects to accomplish within two to three years. The company currently produces 250 tonnes.
Estimates indicate that Poland will surpass Germany in four years, by which time the surface area planted in the
country will have risen to 2,000 hectares from 1,100 in 2003.
The Polish season extends from July to September, so to maintain year-round continuity, Winterwood has set up joint ventures in Spain and France. An initiative in South Africa has led to the introduction of several new varieties on to the UK market.
