Like-for-like sales at Boots fell by 0.8% in the first quarter in the face of stiff competition from the high street.

Chief executive Richard Baker said that competition is intense and there is nothing to suggest this will change in the coming months.

Boots has come under serve pressure in recent month from the major supermarket chains in all areas of its business.

Boots said that cosmetics, over the counter medicines and toiletries had performed well, but that sales were weaker in the lifestyle category.
