Doctors want the price of alcohol to be doubled as a scientific report claimed that UK consumers drinking 50% more than in 1970.

The Academy of Medical Sciences said it wants the government to increase taxes on alcohol and cut the amount holidaymakers can bring home.

Its report, Calling Time, said alcohol accounts for 70% of cirrhosis deaths, which have increased nine times among young people since the 1970s. And that 10% price increase on alcohol would reduce alcohol-related deaths by 34%.

It added that the annual cost of alcohol-related crime and disorder is estimated at £7.3bn.
