Brazilian processed poultry exports to the UK have tripled over the past two years, according to the latest statistics from European body GTIS. Supplies to the UK have increased from 1,500 tonnes in January-June 2003 to 5,100 tonnes in the equivalent period this year.
A spokesman for the National Farmers’ Union said increasing imports emphasised the need to differentiate British chicken. “We need to make our product sufficiently compelling for British consumers. That’s why we’re working closely with the retailers.”
