British food and drink exports could well smash through the £10bn barrier this year, according to Gordon Summerfield, outgoing chairman of Food from Britain.
Speaking at the FFB Export Awards, Summerfield said: “At the end of June, exports of food and drink were £4.65bn.And early indications are that this positive trend has continued into the second half, so we are holding our breath that this may be the year we finally break through the £10bn barrier.”
He praised the “dogged resilience” of British exporters in heading towards that goal, but said much more could be achieved.
“Our research shows there are still many opportunities particularly in ethnic, convenience and high added-value foods.”
At the awards, speciality oils supplier AarhusKarlshamn scooped top prize, while Neal’s Yard Dairy won two gongs and AS Watson was International Retailer of the Year.
The awards were Summerfield’s last official duty before retiring as FFB chairman.
