Chancellor Gordon Brown has increased duty on cigarettes by 9p in his 10th budget.

The increase was condemned by Retailers Against Smuggling, which argued that it created greater opportunities for tobacco smugglers.

Brown also increased tax on wine by 4p and tax on beer by 1p. However, duty on spirits, sparkling wine and cider was frozen.

The Wine & Spirit Trade Association said that it welcomed the decision to freeze duty on sparkling wine but was disappointed with a further increase for wine.
