British American Tobacco is set to announce former Bank of Ireland chairman Richard Burrows as its new chair.

The tobacco giant, whose brands include Lucky Strike and Dunhill, is expected to confirm Burrows as the replacement for the outgoing Jan du Plessis this week.

Du Plessis is stepping down after five years at the helm to become chairman of mining giant Rio Tinto.

The appointment of Burrows has raised eyebrows in the City. Earlier this year he was forced to apologise to Bank of Ireland investors for a loss in share value and cancelling the divi.
