A strong performance by Metro's cash and carry business during the first half of the year, offset declines in its hypermarket and food store divisions, helping to boost group turnover for the first six months of 2002 to E23.87bn compared with E23.1bn for the same period last year. The acquisition of 25 new C&C stores in Germany together with one new store each in Spain, Italy and Romania, helped to increase sales in the C&C business 6.2% to E11bn compared to the first half last year. But sales in the Real hypermarkets fell 2.3% in Germany, and the Extra food stores were down 7.3%. Metro said Extra had lost market share to the hard discounters in a difficult trading environment. During the first six months of the this year Metro added 45 locations across all its businesses, taking the worldwide total to 2,294. {{NEWS }}
