Caravan is raising awareness of social isolation in the grocery industry in the week that loneliness has been revealed as an increasing problem in the UK.

A Mental Health Foundation report highlighted that more people now live alone and the percentage of households occupied by one person has doubled from 6% in 1972 to 12% in 2008.

“Loneliness is an issue for all areas of society, including the grocery industry,” said Gillian Barker, director general of Caravan. “Many of our beneficiaries are older people and Caravan may be their only link to society. The birthday card we send every year is often the only card a beneficiary will receive.”

Barker said: “We currently provide support for 1,950 beneficiaries, but it’s important we continue to fundraise in order to help more people.”
