French retailer Carrefour has revealed a 2.4% increase in its domestic sales to E10.09bn in its third quarter results. Like-for-like sales were up 1.2%.

Internationally, sales increased by 8.3%, with store expansion offsetting low underlying growth, especially in Europe.

Carrefour added that it would open approximately 1.4 million square metres of new space in 2005 "through organic growth and through tactical acquisitions".

The retailer recently entered into an asset-swap deal with Tesco, where Tesco acquired 11 Carrefour stores in the Czech Republic and four stores in Slovakia from Carrefour, while Carrefour acquired six Tesco stores and two sites in Taiwan.
