Carrefour and Wal-Mart have both announced plans to establish hard discount operations in Brazil. Local press reports say Carrefour has 70 Dia supermarket outlets in the pipeline. The first will open in October. Wal-Mart plans to open large numbers of discount stores in Brazil similar to its Mexican chain Bodegas Aurrera. Carrefour has a significant presence in South America with 152 and 128 stores in Brazil and Argentina respectively. Wal-Mart has some catching up to do, with just nine Supercentres and five Sam's Club outlets in Brazil. {{NEWS }}
