A sterling first half performance in France, the US and Thailand offset lacklustre results in Latin America from French food giant Casino. Casino continued to outperform the industry in France, notching up healthy like-for-like sales in a mature market. Analysts said there was still room for further growth as Casino's sales per square foot were below the industry average, and the French market had so far managed to avoid the crippling price competition experienced in other mature European markets. Casino's profit before interest, tax, depreciation and goodwill amortisation for the six months to June 30 rose 35.4% to 577.3 million euros on sales up 26% to 10.4 billion euros, slightly ahead of analysts' expectations. {{NEWS }}
