Spanish cherry growers are considering approaching the European Commission with the intention of setting up an economic interest group to increase consumer awareness and to boost sales. They already point to the success of a national regulatory board which certifies and inspects produce passing through 21 packhouses and in effect is responsible for 4,400 producers and also the major region in the Val del Jerte. It also covers other districts capable of expansion such as Alicante. There is a strong relationship with the industry in neighbouring Portugal. Leaders believe that, with fewer larger retail customers in Europe, the industry will need to work together to meet tighter quality controls. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
