Sir; I was very interested to read your article regarding the potential grocery supply base provided by China (The Grocer, June 8). We have all been aware of Thailand's importance in certain commodity areas and their developing ranges of "added value" products, but few have taken any interest in China's growing emergence. As a wider supply base for commodity products becomes available it follows that encouragement is given to new product development, especially "value added" which is also good for the margin mix. I believe China will become a major competitor for the supply of many volume products in key areas of the grocery market, especially to the UK, and I fully endorse your article.
