John Lewis, Booths, Fox's Biscuits and Higgidy Pies have been named among the winners of Compassion in World Farming Good Egg Awards at a ceremony in London last night.

Some 34 companies, brands and organisations were presented with awards by CIWF patron Penelope Keith and London Food chair Charlotte Uhlenbroek at The House of Commons. The awards recognised their commitments to ditching the battery cage egg in favour of free-range, organic or barn-reared eggs.

Other winners at the awards included Little Chef, Quorn, Starbucks and Walkers Shortbread. "Our spread of winners this year really demonstrates that the European food industry is taking this issue seriously," said CIWF chief executive Philip Lymbery.

Volume sales of free-range shell eggs increased 8.4% last year [TNS], while caged egg sales fell by 3.3%. European regulations will ban the sale of battery cages from 2012, but producers will still be able to install 'enriched colony' systems.
