Inventor Howard Stapleton, MD of Compound Security Systems, has launched the Music Mosquito Mood Calming System, a new gadget that aims to disperse groups of youths hanging around shops by playing classical music.

Unlike his previous controversial gadget the Mosquito - which emitted a high-pitched sound only audible to under-25s - the system plays chill-out and classical tunes.

Being self-contained, the system does away with the need for amplifiers, CD players, music and separate speakers. It can be activated by a timer if required.

In February the Children's Commissioner launched a campaign against the Mosquito, claiming that it indiscriminately targeted young people. But on 8 September a petition to ban its use failed in the European parliament, with only 10% of MEPs voting against its use.
