Coca-Cola has settled an accounting probe by the US Securities and Exchange Commission into the drinks company’s activities in Japan.

The company has agreed to undertake internal reforms following a row about Cola-Cola asking bottlers in Japan between 1997 and 1999 to make additional purchases of cola concentrate in order to boost sales and help it to meet profit targets.

Coca-Cola said it had accepted a cease-and-desist order but will pay no fines.
