The Conservative Party is this week expected to announce proposals to increase tax on alcohol by as much as 10% to tackle binge drinking.

A report by its social policy group will recommend a 'treatment tax' to double the £400m a year already spent on alcohol recovery programmes, according to reports in the Financial Times.

However, the British Beer & Pub Association said the proposal was misguided and would “neither target nor tackle those people who decide to binge drink”.
