The European Commission has agreed Greece is now ready to join the single European currency as of next year. The final decision will be taken by EU ministers meeting in Santa Maria da Feira on June 19 and 20.
As well as adopting the euro for its export business, the country will be issuing euro notes and coins on January 1, 2002, at the same time as the rest of Euroland.
