The cost of organic food could increase, the Soil Association and Organic Farmers and Growers have warned.

Last week, EU ministers agreed a regulation that will allow up to 0.9% of an organic product to come from GM sources without any mention of it on the label.

Shoppers may have to pay more for organic food to ensure it is completely free of GM material, the Soil Association and OFG warned.

“People who eat organic food will end up paying for a GM policy designed to benefit the GM companies,” said Soil Association policy director Peter Melchett. “Either the cost to consumers will go up or they will lose the trust of consumers and their sales will go down.”
