Canadian convenience store operator Couche-Tard has acquired US c-store chain Circle K for C$1.1bn ($830m).

Circle K - owned by the oil company Conoco Philipps - operates 1,663 stores and 350 franchise outlets in 16 states, mostly in Arizona and Florida.

Chief executive of Couche-Tard, Alain Bouchard, said the deal would make it the fourth-largest c-store operator in North America with a total of 4,630 stores.

Bouchard added that there would be purchasing synergies achieved by “ uniting the two companies” and that the “vast majority” of Circle K employees would be maintained.
