Local councils are considering taking action to stop the closure of post offices in their regions.

Essex County Council is negotiating a buy-out price from the Post Office to save some 15 branches in the county earmarked for closure as part of plans to close 2,500 loss-making post offices nationwide by 2009.

As many as 15 other local councils, including West Sussex County Council and Leicestershire County Council, have approached Essex County Council to find out whether they can adopt similar plans.
