Dairy UK, DairyCo and the Carbon Trust have issued guidance on the carbon footprinting of dairy products in the UK.

The guidelines are intended to help processing companies measure carbon emissions across their supply chain as well as raise awareness of the importance of carbon footprinting in the dairy industry.

Dairy UK hopes they will ensure the footprints of dairy products are calculated consistently across the sector. Dairy companies were already committed to reducing the environmental impact of dairy products in the UK, said environment manager Fergus McReynolds, "and this guidance document will help the sector measure, monitor, and manage carbon out of the supply chain."

The guidelines build on the Milk Roadmap, published in 2008, which set out measures to reduce the environmental impact of the dairy industry.
