Pigmeat processor Danish Crown opened its new slaughterhouse at Horsens in Jutland, Denmark, last week. Prince Joachim of Denmark cut the ribbon with a meat cleaver.
Work began on the state-of-the-art facility in August 2002 and cost £180m to complete. The slaughterhouse processes around 30,000 pigs per week, but output will rise to 78,000 a week as the site reaches full capacity.
The plant, which will employ 1,300 people, is fitted with production lines equipped with the latest robotics technology. It has a viewing gallery running its entire length, from which all stages of the production process can be viewed.
