French food group Danone has bought Canadian firm - Sparkling Spring Water - to boost its position as a major player in the office and home delivery water markets.

Danone, which owns of two of the four biggest water brands worldwide, Evian and Volvic, said the acquisition “doubles the group’s position” in the UK and makes it the number one operator in Scotland.

The Sparkling Spring group, which is the number three in the UK bottled water market, has annual revenues of more than 100m euros with activities in North America and Europe.

The deal also gives Danone an entry to the Dutch market with the number three position through two companies based in Eindhoven and Rotterdam.
