French group Danone has posted a 5.7% rise in first quarter sales from its food and beverage businesses boosted by strong growth in fresh dairy products.

Group sales at Danone, which makes yogurts, biscuits, Evian and Volvic mineral water, rose to 3.4bn euros up from up from 3.2bn euros last year.

Sales of Danone's dairy products jumped 13% to1.7bn euros, while its drinks unit sales fell 3% to 854m euros.

Turnover in Europe was up 8%, in Asia it was ahead 4% and flat across the rest of the world.

Danone said the strength of the euro had a 3.2% negative effect on group sales.
