Newspaper retailers and publishers have launched an investigation to halt the decline in home news delivery sales. Get The Paper Round is jointly sponsored by WHSmith News and The Newspaper Publishers Association. The study is being conducted by a working party of representatives from WHSmith News, the NPA and newspaper publishers, in conjunction with participating retailers in Reading. It will last six months and examine areas such as market trends and letterbox penetration. Results will be published next spring. Adrian Smith, commercial director of WHSmith News, said: "We've already had a couple of focus group sessions, discussing issues such as the move towards adult labour, direct debit payments and best practice." He added: "We believe there are around 25,000 HND retailers in the UK although no one has accurate figures which is worrying in itself. "We know numbers are declining all the time and conservatively estimate this decline is costing the industry around £75m a year." Smith said he wanted to guarantee home delivery in every postcode in the UK. {{NEWS }}
