With nitrate levels limited to 140kg an acre, the lowest in the EU, pig numbers are limited and expansion difficult and expensive. However, DS's Anne Birgitte Lundholt says farmers may soon be able to profit from pig manure. "The government is considering changing the rules so farmers get a rebate if they invest in manure treatment."
They would then be eligible to increase their number of pigs per acre. Opportunities also exist to export treated manure.
But it's early days, says Lundholt. "What is being offered is not enough to give the right incentive to invest in the equipment that would be needed."
