Discovery Foods has been forced to redesign one of its factories or face a £300,000 insurance bill another victim of the soaring insurance premiums industry bodies are currently trying to counter (The Grocer, August 24).
Discovery was told it had to double the fire premium for its Daventry plant, which had polystyrene wall panels. The exotic and fine food supplier decided to re-clad the interior of the building in fire-retardant material and commissioned Crown Construction do it at weekends so production was not disrupted.
Joint md Brian Ridgeway said some manufacturers had told him they had decided to self insure, while others were considering closing.
