Health experts have criticised the International Olympic Committee for allowing sponsorship from companies such as Coca-Cola and McDonald's.

Writing in health journal The Lancet, Dr Jeff Collin from Edinburgh University's centre for international public health policy and Dr Ross MacKenzie from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, also questioned why similar companies were allowed to sponsor the World Cup.

Dr Collin said: “The Olympic Games aim to inspire a new generation to greater sporting activity and achievement - an ambition we find difficult to reconcile with the presence of McDonald's and Coca-Cola as official sponsors.”
