Increasing demand for easy peelers is being matched by increases in Mediterranean production, according to the Spanish producers' organisation CLAM.
However, the group has forecast overall production of all types of citrus this winter could be some 3.5% down in an alternative bearing year. Even within this scenario, clementines and mandarins are expected to be stable, particularly due to increased planting in Turkey. The main drop will be in Mediterranean oranges and grapefruit, which as a whole should be around 3%-4% lighter.
Spain will continue to be a key player accounting for half of EU production, some two thirds of easy peelers, and 40% of oranges.
