Domino Printing, which prints barcodes and ‘best before’ dates on a range of food and drink products, has set up a new joint venture in a bid to crack the US egg market.

It has paid £30m for a 15% stake in The Egg Network and will supply laser and inkjet coding equipment to the business.

Of the 72bn eggs produced in the US last year, more than 500m were recalled due to salmonella.

“The simple ‘best before’ date is no longer an adequate protection,” said Domino managing director Nigel Bond. “Today full traceability of products from source to the point of consumption are increasingly required.”
