The lack of price increases in the egg market is leading to frustration within the industry. A spokesperson for the Free-Range Egg Producers Association has noted that production costs remain well above last year as a result of the surge in feed prices.
While these increases also apply to Barn and Cage egg producers, it is the free-range farmers who feel particularly aggrieved at the delay in achieving a price increase because it is the strong consumer demand for their product which is driving the retail egg market forward.
This could stall without a price increase because, as one producer pointed out, “a squeeze on returns will not encourage producers to expand to keep pace with demand”.
