Khalid, MD of Elbrook Cash & Carry, is among the final three contenders for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award at next month's World Food Awards 2010, which celebrates ethnic food and drink in the UK. He and his family set up the Mitcham-based C&C and recently diversified the business into catering with his own Chak89 restaurant and function room.
"I am delighted to be nominated for this award which I see as not only an individual honour but also for my team," said Khalid.
The business is holding a charity ball to celebrate its 25th anniversary on 21 October, and hopes to raise thousands of pounds for Autism Anglia.
The other nominees for Entrepreneur of the Year are Wade Lyn, MD of Cleone Foods, a manufacturer of Caribbean pasties and other food, and Shahid Sheikh, MD of Clifton Packaging, which makes soft packaging for the food industry.
Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's will battle it out for the Best National Retailer Award, while Loon Fung, Quality Foods and Turkish Food Centres have been shortlisted for the Best Independent Retailer Award.
There will also be gongs for caterers, wholesalers, suppliers and packagers, and an award for lifetime achievement, which was last year given to curry king Sir Gulam Noon.
The ceremony will be held on 23 October at the Hilton Park Lane. See worldfoodawards.com for more information.
