The Meat and Livestock Commission will be promoting British pigmeat at the Anuga trade fair in Cologne this weekend as the export ban is relaxed. In a move welcomed by The National Farmers' Union and the MLC the European Commission has given the go-ahead to limited exports of pigmeat from Monday from British counties which have not had incidence of foot and mouth. NFU president Ben Gill said: "This is the first of many steps that will need to be taken to rebuild Britain's livestock industry after the devastation that has been caused by foot and mouth disease." Gill said the NFU will continue to press for the resumption of sheep and beef exports. And a spokesman from the MLC said: "We will continue to push to get more counties freed up, and to extend the lifting of restrictions to lamb and beef." {{NEWS }}
