Overseas grocery franchise business Thomas Green's has opened its first shop in Portugal - and has plans for nine more in Europe this year.

The store in Lagos on the Algarve will sell fresh, frozen and ambient British foods.

Thomas Green's, which was set up to cater for Europe's growing British ex-pat community, already has 10 stores in the Netherlands, Spain and France.

It offers franchisees more than 1,500 food brands, with most lines delivered by Nisa International.

"We have found out what British people like to buy abroad," said MD Philip Evans. "But a growing percentage of customers at the shops are natives."
