An organic meat producer and senior figure within the Soil Association will chair a new, independent steering group set up to advise the government on implementing its Animal Health and Welfare Strategy.
Helen Browning, the Soil Association’s director of food and farming, and whose name is lent to a well-known brand of sausages, bacon and beefburgers, will lead the 12-strong body comprised of experts in farming, veterinary science and animal welfare.
Browning, who is also a commissioner at the MLC and
chairman of the Food Ethics Council, will be joined on the steering group by British Pig Executive boss Stewart Houston and former NFU welfare chairman Neil Cutler.
The England Implementation Group committee will meet every two months. Scotland and Wales will handle implementation separately.
