A prosperous future for food production is only five steps away, Dame Deirdre Hutton, chair of the Food Chain Centre has said.

Speaking at a conference yesterday, Dame Hutton said that farm businesses must form a clear business strategy to increase profitability and work with improvement groups to cut costs by 10% or more.

Farm businesses should also differentiate their products, achieve manufacturing excellence and increase output, and collaborate in order to achieve up to 20% in savings.

“These five paths need to be part of policy, used as best practice, be part of farm advisory packages and included in the national curriculum for our future farmers,” Dame Hutton added.

Meanwhile, Joanne Denney-Finch has been named the new chair of the FCC, replacing Dame Hutton who is stepping down from the position to become chair of the Food Standards Agency.

Denney-Finch, who has over 25 years’ experience in the food industry, has been chief executive of the IGD since 1998.
